Attendance Policy and Discipline

ULAS St. Basil’s Dance Attendance Policy and Discipline

Background

ULAS is a respected Ukrainian Dance organization within the Edmonton performing arts community. To ensure the dancers learn and grow in a positive team environment, ULAS expects that registered dancers attend rehearsals.

Attendance

Teachers take attendance at the beginning of every class.

All dancers, no matter which level, are expected to attend rehearsals and dress rehearsals of their group. Where circumstances arise that the dancer cannot attend rehearsal, they should inform their group as early as possible and will be marked as absent by the instructor,

A dancer may miss no more than 4 dance rehearsals within the dance season.

Discipline

Dancers who miss 5 or more rehearsals will be put on probation.

During probation, the dancer will be pulled from choreography and will not be permitted to perform dances with the rest of their group. That dancer should still attend rehearsals.

A dancer who is able to positively rectify their attendance and commitment to the group will be taken off probation at the discretion of the Artistic Director.

No refunds will be given to dancers who are put on probation.

Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the dancer and their family to ensure that they keep track of how many classes they have missed.

If uncertain, they are encouraged to ask the instructor about their attendance record.

If a discrepancy arises between the dancer and instructor about how many rehearsals have been missed, the attendance sheet of the instructor will be taken as the final tally.

We've created an action plan for each participant to ensure a smooth season:

It is the responsibility of every dancer to:

  • arrive on time

  • arrive in rehearsal attire with a water bottle

  • have a positive, hard working attitude

  • respect other dancers, instructors and the rules of the classroom and St. Basil’s Cultural Centre. Socializing is a fun part of Ukrainian dance, it should be kept to a minimum (water break times) inside the classroom. There is absolutely no running, playing tag, or loud games in the hallway

  • The elevator is very old, so unless you have a stroller or mobility device, please use the stairs

  • At the cultural centre, be mindful of other user groups that share the hall. Place your shoes to the right of the doorway, neatly, to avoid anyone tripping on them

  • If you have to wait for a sibling, consider crossing 109 street to Violet Archer playground (behind Pearls Dental) or crossing 73 avenue to visit Queen Alexandra Community Playground

It is the responsibility of every parent to:

  • ensure his or her child/children do not play in the foyers of the Cultural Centre and refrain from using the elevator or running up and down stairs.

  • ensure your child's outdoor shoes are tucked to the side of the foyer

  • speak with your children about not disturbing or interrupting any classes or meetings

  • We are here to learn dance, not police misbehaviours - this is an elective, fun, extracurricular activity, if your child really doesn’t want to be here, please, don’t force them to the detriment of other kids in the class. This disrupts valuable instruction time. If there is an issue you would like to discuss, please email the team ahead of time to arrange a meeting

  • remain outside the classroom unless it is "Parent Watch Day" or in the event a substitute instructor can not be found, we will invite one parent to sit in the classroom foyer because we follow the "Rule of Two"
